Description
1768, Maine.
In a time when women are considered property and have no money or assets of their own, young, vulnerable Ashley Hatch is forced to leave the only home she’s ever known in England and travel to Maine in the Americas to marry her late father’s partner if she wishes to inherit a dowry, half ownership of a logging company, WOODLAND. Never having met her parents, Ashley struggles to come to grips with this new bit of betrayal since her father’s Will won’t allow her to wed her current fiancé. More importantly, her betrothed won’t marry her without a dowry.
Owning the other half of WOODLAND, Aaron Chatwell chaffs that he must wed his late partner’s daughter if he wishes to keep control of the business. To make matters worse, the Will states they must live together under the same roof for a year. If at the end of that period Aaron and Ashley have not consummated their vows, they may dissolve their marriage. Aaron is then free to buy out Ashley’s interest in the business and they’re free to go their separate way.
From the beginning, their relationship is tested. Desires and attraction run deep. Superstitious loggers resent Ashley as half owner, and of a female even being present. Then accidents begin happening regularly, making tensions worse.
Can they find a common ground? Do they want their marriage to endure? Are superstitions true or are there more sinister forces at play? Will past relationships destroy them? Will love win out? An emotional story that will keep you guessing until the surprise ending….

I finally got around to doing reviews. Sorry it’s so late! Woodland is a one of those novels that takes you back to early America and just how tough it was to survive. A bevy of lovable and memorable characters, Sweeney, Donald, Sarah. And those horrible antagonists! No, I’m NO spoiling the story’s plots! You’ll just have to read yourself! You’ll be happy you did.

This is a really good period piece showing real men of that time period and how they really treated their women. I loved the unexpected ending. Nice job.

It was a pleasure meeting Ms. Russell at a book signing. Such a sweet woman. And her mind! I have no idea how she keeps cranking out these super novels. Where do these unique scenarios come from? To date, one of my all time favorite authors.

I was impressed with the amount of research this book took. It’s very informative without trying to be and very well written. Entertaining characters.

Young & vulnerable, Ashley must wed her late father’s logging business partner or be left without. Since she was raised by a lady in England, Ashley has no idea what she’s in for when she steps foot in WOODLAND. Talk about being forced to grow up.

I wasn’t sure if I’d like this book or not given logging camps wouldn’t normally be in my thoughts pertaining to romance. But my favorite author delivered just like she always does! A riveting emotion driven saga. You feel yourself drawn right into the story. lol At the end I was so emotionally spent… but it was worth every tear, sigh, giggle that escaped me.

I love reading books but I hate writing reviews. But authors love reviews for more sales. So here goes. It was an excellent read. A lot happened that I wasn’t expecting and by the end, I was blown away. I highly recommend reading this story.

An emotional roller coaster! Poor Ashley, all alone, deceased parents and forced to marry a stranger. Its hard to believe laws used to believe women were property. Thank God, times have changed!

A wonderfully emotional read that will have you rooting for sheltered, pampered Ashley. Watching her mature is tenderly rewarding.
Lidia M (verified owner) –
Loved the story. But very glad I didn’t live during that time period. They had it hard, especially women being considered property. Great ending.
Barbie B (verified owner) –
Ashley (heroine) was a bit weepy at first but she toughened up quick. Aaron? A man among men. Strong, decisive but putty in Ashey’s feminine hands. A true romance with sever UNEXPECTED twists! You’ll love this novel.
Cathy R (verified owner) –
Loved the unusual storyline. I’ve never read a romance in a 1700s lumber company but it was really well researched and they story great. Phissst…the ending was a shocker. completely unexpected.

Marlene A (verified owner) –
Forced marriage, illness, exs, fire, mayhem happening at the mill sites. So much action and excitement.
Anise A (verified owner) –
I enjoyed this unusual romance. Unusual in that it takes place in Maine, USA at a logging camp in the 1700s. A really tough time to live in America. Hard work where women had to be as tough as the men just to survive the harsh winters. A really engrossing story with true facts and visuals, a ‘mental’ treat.
Helen Wright (verified owner) –
A very unique story. Not one I’d usually read but since I’ve bought many of Debra’s novels, I figured why not? So glad I did! Hands down, one emotional story of a young woman being forced to grow up in a strange country and be wed to an older, roughed man accustomed to running his logging business with an iron hand. Who do you think will win this match or wits and wills?
Hepsa Hylys (verified owner) –
Very good reading. Highly recommend.
Wantia French (verified owner) –
I can’t remember ever reading a romance novel that took place at a lumber site. Although what Ms. Russell shows, that logging was huge business in that time period, not many would think of it as a possible romantic setting. Yet Ms. Russell makes it believable with no effort. Excellent plots and mini plots. A fulfilling read.

Why is it whenever I read one of Ms. Russell’s novels, I’m always amazed by the unusual twists ad turns? In some places, it had me sitting on the edge of my seat!
